- First Words — 24 cards: everyday words with one big, clear picture (animals, nature, home, food)
- Grown-ups’ guide page: contents, print & cut instructions, and Montessori’s 3-period lesson explained in three lines
- Storage box labels page: 4 cut-out labels (Alphabet / Numbers / First Words / My Flashcards with a name line)
- Cutting guides on every card — dashed cut lines, 4 large cards per page
- Both sizes in the price: US Letter AND UK A4
- 71 cards total, all artwork original to Velvet Otter Books
The learning ladder: these cards teach recognition and naming. When your child knows the letters, the next step is Milo’s Tracing & Writing Workbook — the same letters, now traced and written with a pencil.

Overview
A complete first flashcard set in the Montessori style: one clear picture, realistic colours, large friendly type, and nothing else competing for a small child’s attention. Three sets — Alphabet (26 cards), Numbers 0–20 (21 cards), and First Words (24 cards) — give you 71 big cards to print, cut and use in naming games, matching games and quiet shelf work. A grown-ups’ page shows you exactly how to play Montessori’s famous 3-period lesson, and cut-out box labels keep the sets tidy between uses.
What’s Included
- Alphabet set: 26 cards (Aa–Zz), each with uppercase + lowercase letter, original picture and word
- Numbers set: 21 cards (0–20), each with numeral, number word and touch-and-count dots; Zero card included
- First Words set: 24 cards of everyday vocabulary with one large picture each
- Grown-ups’ guide page: print & cut instructions + the 3-period lesson
- Storage box labels page: 4 labels, one with a “belongs to” name line
- Dashed cutting guides on every card; 4 cards per page; US Letter AND UK A4 files
Key Benefits
- True Montessori design — one picture per card, realistic colours, no clutter, no cartoon chaos: the child looks at the thing itself
- Built for little hands and eyes — big cards (about 3.7 × 4.8 in on US Letter, similar on A4 — a quarter of each printed page), large clear type throughout
- Honest phonics — words chosen for the sound the letter makes (X = fox), and alphabet words match the pictures exactly
- Numbers you can touch — every numeral card carries the right count of dots, so quantity is learned by finger, not just by eye
- A system, not a pile — box labels and a one-set-at-a-time rotation guide keep 71 cards organised
Who Is This For?
- Parents of toddlers and preschoolers (about 18 months – 6 years) starting letters, numbers and vocabulary
- Montessori and homeschool families who want printable, realistic-image materials
- Nursery, kindergarten and early-years teachers (licensed for one classroom — see Disclaimer)
- Speech and early-intervention practitioners building naming vocabulary
How It Works
- Download both PDFs (US Letter + A4) as soon as your payment is confirmed — they also wait in your account’s Downloads library.
- Print at 100% (“Actual size”) — cardstock is best; laminate for toddler-proof cards.
- Cut along the dashed lines (round the corners if little hands will hold them).
- Start with just 2–3 cards and the 3-period lesson on the guide page: Name it → Find it → Say it. Stop while it’s still fun.
- Rotate sets weekly with the box labels; add cards as your child masters the first ones.
- When letters are known, move up the ladder to Milo’s Tracing & Writing Workbook for pencil work.
Why It’s Different
Most printable flashcard sets are clip-art collages: busy backgrounds, three fonts per card, and pictures that don’t match the word’s sound. Ours were drawn from scratch for this pack — one consistent, calm illustration style, realistic colours, and exactly one idea per card. The alphabet set respects phonics (no “X is for xylophone” shortcuts — X is fox, the sound children actually need). The numbers set goes to 20, not 10, and gives Zero its own kind card instead of skipping it. And it’s a complete first library in one purchase — letters, numbers and words that match each other — instead of three separate sets from three different sellers in three different styles.
Delivery & Compatibility
Instant download after payment confirmation; files also remain in My Account → Downloads. You receive two PDFs (US Letter and UK A4) that open in any PDF reader, browser, tablet or phone. Print at 100% / “Actual size” on paper or card. Cards print equally well in colour (recommended, for the realistic-colour design) — the pictures also read clearly in greyscale if you need an economy set.
