Overview
Most meal-planning templates are separate files wearing a trench coat: a recipe sheet that doesn’t know the plan, a plan that doesn’t know the shopping list, a shopping list you still write by hand from memory — and the forgotten coconut milk to prove it. The Weekly Meal Planner System is one connected workbook where the four parts are linked by recipe names: your Recipe Library holds what your household cooks, each recipe’s ingredients live on the Ingredients sheet, the Weekly Plan picks meals from dropdowns of your own recipes, and the Shopping List assembles itself from the week — every ingredient, duplicates totalled, checked line by line against your Pantry Inventory before it dares tell you to buy anything.
What’s Included
- Weekly-Meal-Planner-System.xlsx — the blank workbook, 6 sheets (START HERE · Recipe Library · Recipe Ingredients · Weekly Plan · Pantry Inventory · Shopping List)
- Weekly-Meal-Planner-System-SAMPLE.xlsx — the same system carrying a real family library: 20 recipes, 105 ingredient lines, a full week planned (28 meals, 17 recipes), a stocked pantry — so you can watch the shopping list build itself before you type a thing
- Meal-Planner-Printables-US-Letter.pdf + Meal-Planner-Printables-UK-A4.pdf — 3 pages each: Weekly Meal Plan page · aisle-grouped Shopping List page · Pantry Checklist page
- Quick-Start-Guide.pdf — 3 pages: library setup, the Sunday 15 minutes, reading the list, the pantry habit, troubleshooting
- Free updates: buy once, and corrected/improved files are re-issued to buyers
Key Benefits
- The list writes itself — plan the week and the shopping list exists: no transcription, no forgotten ingredients, no second trip for one tin
- Duplicates are totalled, not repeated — cheddar in five recipes is one honest number (750 g in the SAMPLE’s week), compared against the 80 g actually in the fridge before it says BUY
- The pantry gets a vote — staples you already have (rice: 600 g needed, 1,000 g on hand) stay off the list automatically
- Your library, your food — it plans the meals your household really cooks, at your quantities, not a stranger’s recipe cards
- Capacity stated honestly — 60 recipes / 400 ingredient lines / 60 pantry staples, tested end-to-end at 20 recipes and 105 lines (see the SAMPLE), not a marketing number
Who Is This For?
- Whoever plans the week’s food and writes the list — and is tired of the list being the weak link
- Families rotating the same 15–25 real meals who want the rotation to run itself
- Households wasting food (and money) buying duplicates of what’s already in the cupboard
- Meal-preppers and batch cooks who plan a week at a time
- Owners of our Family Budget & Grocery Money System who want the food-planning half to match its money half
How It Works
- Build the library once — add your recipes (one row each) and their ingredient lines; about 2 minutes per recipe, starting with 10 favourites.
- Stock the pantry sheet — your staples, quantities, and the low level that should trigger a restock.
- Every Sunday, 15 minutes — set the Monday, pick the week’s 28 meals from the dropdowns. The plan totals the cooking time; the shopping list builds itself.
- Filter Verdict to BUY (or print the aisle-grouped shopping page), shop once, and knock the pantry quantities roughly right when you unpack.
Why It’s Different
Rival meal planners sell the pieces separately — a recipe database here, a meal planner there, a “grocery list” that’s a blank table — and the linking, the part that saves the time, is left as an exercise for the buyer. This system’s links are the product: plan-to-list via name matching (MATCH), duplicate totals via SUMIFS, pantry comparison via INDEX/MATCH — all standard formulas that calculate identically in Excel and Google Sheets, with no macros, no add-ins and no app subscription quietly expiring. It also refuses the fake version of this feature: quantities are per recipe exactly as you wrote them, one unit per ingredient is the house rule (stated up front, not buried), and the money side — prices, trip totals, waste — is honestly signposted to the Family Budget & Grocery Money System rather than half-duplicated here.
Delivery & Compatibility
Instant download after purchase. One .xlsx that calculates identically in Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel (2019, Microsoft 365 and older versions that support standard functions) and Apple Numbers — standard functions only (INDEX/MATCH, SUMIFS, COUNTIF, SUMPRODUCT class), no macros, no add-ins, no external links, nothing to install. Every link in the chain was verified against the filled SAMPLE before release: 717 automated checks, covering all 105 ingredient lines end to end (plan → list → pantry → verdict) by independent recalculation. Printables are PDFs in US Letter and UK A4. The workbook is about 50 KB — light enough to open instantly on a phone at the shop.
Disclaimer
The Weekly Meal Planner System is an organisational tool for your household’s own recipes and shopping. It contains no dietary, nutritional or medical advice, and recipe quantities are exactly as you enter them — the system totals and compares, it does not judge. Pantry verdicts are only as current as the quantities you keep; the guide’s two-moment habit (in when you unpack, out when you cook) keeps them honest. Prices and product details are as listed at time of purchase; free corrected editions are re-issued to buyers if a fault is ever found.
Pairs well with
- Family Budget & Grocery Money System — the money side this system bolts onto: grocery trip log, Price Book, waste tracker, monthly household budget
- Life Organizer System — the household command workbook (budget snapshot, tasks, habits, calendar, decisions) whose light meal page this system deepens
